*Autos-da-fé* (Portuguese, n. pl.; singular *auto-da-fé*, literally "act of faith") — the public ceremonies of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition at which the sentences of condemned heretics were pronounced, followed by the carrying out of punishment, often burning at the stake.
