This is the 3th lecture of *[[PA Psychology of the Self]]* by [[Keith Campbell]], [[Peterson Academy]]. #incomplete ## Freudian defense mechanisms Freud thinks we have to defend against impulses that arise from our unconscious, and his daughter developed a system of defense mechanisms. Some of them are: 1. denial - repression but more aggressive 2. transference - I imagine this can be connected to Girard's scapegoating 3. intellectualization - what all academics do 4. sublimation - artists do this when they channel their anger or lust into creating art 5. humor These defense mechanisms help us integrate with parts of ourselves that we are less comfortable with, or what Jung calls our shadow.
