God is the ultimate source of light. In the creation account in Genesis, "let there be light" that causes the establishment of "day and night" happened before the creation of the sun. In Psalms we see language such as "in your light we see light" being used. Light comes directly from God, and is not separate from God or a mere creation of God. In Revelations 22, we see the light of God being contrasted with the light from a lamp and the light from the sun. Both of the latter are not needed anymore, because God's light shines in its full glory. The same idea could be seen when it is said that the suns will be darkened, because God's light overpowers it.
The light of God establishes day and night, and John says the light of God gives life, and without it no life could come about. From this we can deduce that the light of God is the precondition for life and all creation. Light is order, and time is a manifestation of such order. Light brings about day, a victory over perpetual night which is chaos. Day is the light of God itself. The end of this Jewish story is the day when there will no longer be night.[^1]
